five new foods friday

I like that ‘Friday’ starts with the letter ‘F’ (not for the bad reason, people :P) because so does ‘five.’ I think five is a good way to sum up the week (or two) with some of the new foods I’ve used/ate lately.
1. Homemade haagen dazs ice cream.
So, I have an ice cream problem. Who cares!! I couldn’t not share this first. You need to head on over to Chocolate Covered Katie’s site to get the recipe for healthy haagen dazs, and then you’ll thank me. Unless your blender won’t cooperate and won’t turn frozen ice cubes into velvety smooth ice cream. Which mine didn’t at first. Poor Tyler felt the whiplash!
I topped mine with some maple syrup and it was so good and creamy. Now I want more!
2. Smoothie in a bag.
Doesn’t that sound appetizing? I thought so when I was slurping it out of the baggie. Ok, I’m kidding, but seriously, this will make your life a walk in the fricken park! I’m not lazy, but I like easy (no gutter heads again, please); especially since time is money, people. So what I decided to do was assemble my smoothie ingredients, put them in labeled baggies, and stick them in the freezer.
This way, when you’re in a pinch (read: when you’re the husband who hits ‘snooze’ in the morning and ends up rushing to get out the door!), all you do is add liquid and blend.
Which brings me to the next new thing…
3. Garden of Life Raw Meal powder.
I won this when Caitlin was holding a giveaway a little while back, so I finally decided to put it to the test yesterday with my SIAB (smoothie in a bag; I’m clearly getting lazy now). I definitely can deal with this taste! It’s not too overpowering and not overly sweet. It worked perfectly in my apricot-pear-avo green smoothie concoction ;).
4. Soft dried apricots.
Now, if you never have liked apricots, then skip this one altogether (but seriously, you don’t like apricots?!). I, however, will eat fresh ones, but I love me some dried apricots…until I found these bad boys. These are dried apricots that have been rehydrated. Mind blown?
Ok, so you’ve probably already seen them and I’m late to the party, as per the usual, but still, these are my new faves (sorry ‘just dried’ counterpart). They’re mushy, juicy and full of flavour. I could (and do) eat a bag in a day.
5. Fruit upside down pancakes.
One day I decided to add fruits to my pancakes and thought throwing them in the pan to cook them a bit before adding the batter would be a good idea…and then the fruit upside down pancake obsession began.
I’ve tried: cherry, plum and peach. Peach rules the roost, by far. For a quickie recipe, here is what I did:
- for the pancake: basic pancake recipe + 3 tbsp hemp seeds + 2 tsp ground flax (that’s for 2-3 people, and might need more liquid to thin out the batter).
- for the fruit (preferably the peaches): over med-high heat add some butter to melt in a frying pan, then sprinkle some brown sugar (in spots where you will pour pancakes), add the fruit slices, sprinkle with cinnamon and let them cook for 1-2 mins before pouring batter over.
Delicious! Especially since peaches are in season. You know what I’ll be getting more of this coming Saturday!
Other things to note that are equally as good (but maybe not new):
I haven’t made one in a looooong time, so when I decided to make one again last week, it was amazing. We were in a serious breakfast rut and this (temporarily) brought us out of it! I added red bell pepper, onion and mushrooms, with sliced avocado and fresh salsa on the side. The last two are mandatory for scrambles!
Grilled cheese is definitely not new, but I did add some green onions to spruce it up and it was awesome.
And now I’m hungry. It’s time to go and eat.
